Broncos stumble in Region V semifinal, drop contest 3-1 to Weatherford College

On Friday afternoon New Mexico Military Institute suffered a 3-1 loss to No. 2 Weatherford College in the Region V semifinal at the Betty Jo Crumm Graber Athletic Center in Weatherford, TX. With the loss, the Broncos dipped 24-9 on the year. With the win, Weatherford improved to 31-2 overall.

SET 1

To open the match, both teams were going back and forth. Every point the Broncos scored was answered promptly by Weatherford College. The first 10 points of the match neither side was able to grow their lead to more than two points. After being tied 6-6, NMMI took an 8-6 lead with an attack error by Weatherford College.

The back and forth continued throughout the set as the score was tied 11-11. Weatherford was able to take a slight 14-12 lead, but it wouldn't last long as the score was tied once again at 15-15. The battle continued for the next 10 points as the match was tied 20-20. The Broncos were able to hand Weatherford their first set loss in two months after taking the first set 25-23.

SET 2

After dropping the first set, Weatherford College sought revenge in the second set. Despite being close early on, the Coyotes opened the set on a 11-5 run to force an NMMI timeout.

Following the timeout the Broncos established some rhythm, but it wasn't enough to create a comeback. The Coyotes took a 22-12 lead before taking the second set 25-16.

SET 3/4

In the third set the Broncos battled for every point as they opened the set with a 8-5 lead. However, Weatherford was able to fight back and 10-8 lead with a rapid response by the home team.

Throughout the set NMMI tried to retake the lead but Weatherford was able to maintain a two-point lead through the majority of the set. After earning consecutive points, NMMI forced the Coyotes to call a timeout as they trailed 20-18.

Following the timeout, Weatherford closed out the set on a 5-4 run to secure the third set 25-22.

With momentum on their side from the last two sets, Weatherford was able to advance to the Region V final with a 25-21 win in the fourth set.
