On Saturday afternoon New Mexico Military Institute dipped to 5-5 in district play with a pair of losses to Sandia Prep at the NMMI Ballpark. With a 6-3 and 7-4 loss, the Colts dip to 8-12 overall. With the pair of wins, Sandia Prep improves to 12-7 overall and 7-2 in district play.
GAME 1
The Sundevils struck first in the opening frame, jumping to a 2-0 lead behind an L Ruelas RBI double and a run scored on a wild pitch. However, the Colts responded in the bottom of the second. After Michael Ortega and Caden Carter reached base, Brock Spear delivered a clutch two-out single to center, driving in both runners to tie the game at 3-3.
The momentum shifted permanently in the top of the fourth. Sandia Prep loaded the bases and forced the issue, scoring three runs on a combination of a costly infield error and a two-RBI single from P Gonzalez.
From there, the Sundevils' defense and pitching took over. Despite NMMI threatening in the fifth by putting two runners in scoring position, Sandia Prep’s J Mahboub remained poised on the mound to escape the jam. The Sundevils' bullpen shut the door in the final frames, including a clean sixth and seventh, to clinch the win and silence the Colts' late-inning comeback hopes.
GAME 2
The Sundevils wasted no time setting the tone, batting around in the top of the first to put up six runs. The surge was highlighted by a two-RBI single from J Mahboub and a hard ground ball from L Hardcastle that drove in another pair. Capitalizing on walks and a key infield error, Sandia Prep built a commanding 6-0 lead before the Colts could record three outs.
NMMI slowly chipped away at the deficit, showing resilience in the early innings. The Colts got on the board in the bottom of the first via a double play and added two more in the second through aggressive baserunning, including a steal of home by Connor Kent. By the fourth inning, the Colts had narrowed the gap to 7-4 after Konstantino Scopelitis scored on a groundout by Caden Carter.
However, the comeback stalled as Sandia Prep’s pitching and defense locked down. Despite the Colts drawing several walks and putting runners on in the fifth and sixth, they were unable to find the timely hit needed to close the gap. B Hardcastle entered in the seventh to record the final three outs, sealing the win for the Sundevils.
