On Tuesday night New Mexico Military Institute came back from two sets down to take the match in five sets, 3-2 over Jal High School at the Godfrey Athletic Center. With the win, the Colts improve to 8-4 on the year while Jal dips to a 7-5 overall record.

SET 1

In the opening set, Jal found some early momentum and used it throughout the set to maintain some distance between the Colts and Panthers. Down 18-15 in the first set, NMMI tried to change the match as they called a timeout to stop the Jal momentum. Following the NMMI timeout, Jal conducted a 6-1 run to force the final NMMI timeout as they trailed 24-16. Jal was able to secure the first set 25-16.

SET 2

Much like the first set, Jal took a quick 10-5 lead. After a NMMI timeout, the Panthers conducted a 11-6 run as they held a 21-11 advantage in the second set. The NMMI offense wasn’t able to establish any rhythm as both teams traded points.

The Colts were able to get a few points back but Jal finished the set strong and secured a 2-0 lead with a 25-18 win in the second set.

SET 3

The middle set was a battle. Both teams went back and forth to try and establish offensive rhythm. The set was tied through the first 10 points as the Colts tried to separate themselves and extend the match another set. With an 18-15 lead, NMMI forced a Jal timeout. Jal answered with a 4-2 run to trail 20-19.

Up by one, NMMI grew their lead to 23-21, forcing Jal’s final timeout of the middle set. Following the timeout the Colts earned the next two points to secure the middle set 25-21.

SET 4

With momentum on their side, NMMI jumped out to an early 9-4 lead with the help of a service ace by Kaytlyn Lackey. After a Jal timeout, the Colt momentum continued as they kept winning the long rallies and growing their lead.

With the help of seven consecutive points off the service of Mia Martinez, the Colts enjoyed a 21-11 lead. With momentum on their side, the Colts took the fourth set easily, 25-12.

SET 5

Much like the third and fourth sets, the final set was all NMMI.

After scoring the first three points of the set, NMMI jumped out to a 7-4 lead in the final set, forcing a Jal timeout. However, the timeout was not enough to stop the Colts as they took a 12-6 lead – forcing the final timeout of the match for the visiting team.

With momentum and offensive rhythm, NMMI closed out the match on a 5-0 run to secure the match with a 15-6 win in the final set.
