Broncos drop both ends of Friday’s doubleheader against Amarillo College

On Friday afternoon New Mexico Military Institute dipped to 23-25 on the year and 11-19 in conference play with a 10-3 loss in game one and a 14-1 loss in game two of Friday's doubleheader at the NMMI Ballpark. With the wins, Amarillo improves to 21-29 on the season with a 14-16 mark in conference play.

GAME 1

After a scoreless opening two innings, Amarillo College scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the third with the help of an error to go ahead 1-0. The Broncos responded in the top of the fourth inning with a solo bomb by Jose Rodriguez Mestre – his fourth home run of the season to tie the game at 1-1. In the bottom of the fourth, Amarillo answered with a solo shot of their own to go back on top 2-1.

In the bottom of the fifth, Amarillo grew their lead with a seven spot as they scored the runs off of two doubles and a home run by Payton Bush to take a 9-1 lead. In the top of the sixth, Jose Rodriguez Mestre opened up with a leadoff triple to get on base. In the next at bat, Misael Maldonado Baez tallied his 9th homer of the year to make it a 9-3 ballgame. In the bottom of the inning the Badgers scored with a walk to hold onto a 10-3 advantage.

GAME 2

In game two of the series, Amarillo took control in the bottom of the third inning. The Badgers used the bottom of the inning to score six runs. Amarillo used two RBI-doubles and a home run to grow their lead. The Broncos responded with a one-out home run by Gianlucas Rivera Gotay – his first of the year to get NMMI on the board.

In the bottom of the fourth, Amarillo scored a trio of runs with a home run and an RBI-single by Zyon Hamilton to take a 9-1 lead. In the bottom of the fifth inning, the Badgers scored five more runs to end the game after five innings, 14-1.

The Broncos wrap up the series with Amarillo College tomorrow afternoon with a doubleheader. First pitch for game one is scheduled for noon at the NMMI Ballpark.
