Four Broncos named to All-Conference baseball team

Four New Mexico Military Institute Bronco baseball players were named to the Western Junior College Athletic Conference All-Conference team.

Pitcher Jorge Garcia was named first-team after going 6-5 overall with a 2.96 ERA and a team-best 67 strikeouts.

Garcia tallied eight wins during his two-year career with NMMI.

He only walked 12 batters in 73 innings of work. Garcia went through his first six starts without walking a single batter.

Garcia struck out a season-high eight batters during a 10-0 win over Otero Junior College on Feb. 7.

Catcher Diego Solis earned honorable mention honors after compiling a .354 average with 45 hits, two home runs and 24 RBI.

In 12 games, Solis tallied two or more hits. His best outing at the plate came during a 20-9 win over Midland College on March 25, where he finished 5 for 6 with four singles and a home run along with two RBI.

Another notable offensive performance was when he went 4 for 5 with two doubles, a triple, single and two RBI to help the Broncos defeat El Paso Community College, 14-5, on April 8.

Outfielder Guillermo Borquez also earned honorable mention honors. Borquez hit .305 with 46 hits, three home runs and 35 RBI.

Borquez led NMMI with 13 doubles. Defensively, he had 64 putouts for a fielding percentage of .970.

He strung together an 11-game hitting streak from April 14-30. His best game at the plate came during an 8-6 win over Frank Phillips College where he went 3 for 4 with two singles, a double and three RBI.

Lastly, infielder Rhett Stokes was named honorable mention after hitting .362 with a team-high 67 hits. Stokes also led the Broncos with 11 triples while ranked second with six home runs. He also had a team-best 39 RBI and 19 stolen bases.

In 21 games, Stokes had two or more hits.
