Colts blank Chaparral High en route to 43-0 victory

On Friday night Colt Football improved to 2-1 on the year, taking down Chaparral High in shutout fashion, 43-0 at Colt Field.

Q1

After Chaparral took the opening kickoff, it was all Colts from there on. The NMMI opened the game forcing a fumble as Matthew Cao forced the ball loose before falling on the ball.

With the ball on the Chaparral 26, Tegin Maloney took two handoffs before rushing for his first touchdown of the night from 14 yards out. After forcing a quick three and out, the offense took advantage after Cole Seidenberger took a direct snap from the nine-yard line to give NMMI a 15-0 lead after the first quarter.

Q2

The Colt defense forced a three and out to open the quarter and NMMI would continue their momentum. On the next drive the home team moved the ball 67 yards in eight plays before Seidenberger connected with Alex Sanchez from 25 yards out to give the Colts a 22-point advantage heading into halftime.

Q3

Not showing any signs of slowing down, the Colts wasted no time scoring in the second half. On the opening possession of the second half NMMI continued to display their high powered offense moving the ball 61 in just five plays on a drive which was finished by a 15-yard rushing touchdown by Cohen Tomasits to put the Colts up 29-0 after the PAT.

A possession later, Tomasits scored his second rushing touchdown of the night, this time from five yards out to give NMMI a 36-0 lead.

Q4

Continuing to show their dominance, the Colt defense continued to hold their opponent from not only scoring but also picking up any yards. Marcus Kannady picked off the Chaparral quarterback to give the Colts the ball at the Chaparral 40.

Using 5:36 off the clock, the Colts moved the ball 40 yards as Kannady put an end to drive with a four yard touchdown run to secure the 43-0 scoreline for the Colts.

On defense the Colts only allowed 91 total yards while allowing -3 rushing yards. Head coach John O’Mera enjoyed what he saw from his defense, “Our defense runs to the football and good things happen when you have 11 guys behind the ball.”

Through the air NMMI allowed just 94 yards while creating two turnovers in the process. On third down the Colts only allowed two first downs, stopping the Lobos only fourth down conversion attempt. In total the Colts allowed just four total first downs.

On offense, the Colts tallied for 20 first downs going 4-6 on third down conversions and 2-2 on fourth down conversions. In total, NMMI picked up 348 yards with 269 of those coming through the ground game.

With a complete team effort, Seidenberger led the way with 77 yards through the ground while picking up 79 yards through to the air to add with a touchdown. On only six touches, Tomasits found the endzone twice for a total of 28 yards. “Complete team performance, it wasn't just an individual … it was gang tackling and people doing their assignments and doing it right,” O’Mera said.

The Colts return to action next Friday, Sept. 20 as they travel to Hatch, NM for a 7 p.m. with Hatch Valley to open district play.
