On Tuesday night New Mexico Military Institute improved to 4-1 in district play with a 3-0 win over Tularosa in the Godfrey Athletic Center. With the sweep, the Lady Colts moved to 12-9 on the year. With the loss, Tularosa dips to 12-10 on the year with a 1-4 mark in district play.
SET 1
The first few points of the match were split between the two teams as the score was tied 5-5 early on. However, NMMI found another gear as they conducted a 6-1 run to take a 11-6 lead behind a powerful kill by Ana Maria Caetano Silva.
Tularosa fought back for every point as they made it a 13-13 game after they were able to stop the offensive momentum by the Lady Colts. With an immediate response, NMMI jumped out to a 23-19 lead – forcing a Tularosa timeout. NMMI was able to close out the first set 25-19.
SET 2
In the middle set, Tularosa took a 3-0 lead to open the match. The Lady Colts fought back with some great defense as they were able to tie the set 5-5. Trying to gain control of the match, Tularosa took an 11-8 lead.
Both teams battled back and forth as the set was tied 15-15. With some help with a few kills by Siany Mcghan-Barthel and Kaytlyn Lackey the Lady Colts found some offensive rhythm. NMMI blasted out to a 24-18 lead as they controlled the match.
Sofia Stacanelli secured the middle set as she recorded a kill to take the second set 25-18 and a 2-0 set lead.
SET 3
With a 2-0 set lead, NMMI used that momentum to secure the final set. After a couple of early kills in the set, Tularosa took a quick 4-2 lead. Both teams battled for the next points as the score was tied a couple of times before being tied 9-9.
With a kill by Kaytlyn Lackey NMMI was able to take a 15-12 advantage to start the end of the match. From that point on, NMMI conducted a 7-2 run behind excellent defense as they enjoyed a 22-14 lead.
However, Tularosa was not quite down. They battled their way back to make it a 23-20 set – forcing a Lady Colt timeout. Following the timeout, the Lady Colts stopped any Tularosa rhythm as they secured the match with a 25-20 set three victory.
