Colts sweep Dexter in Thursday’s doubleheader

On Thursday evening New Mexico Military picked up their first two district wins of the season with a 22-2 win in game one, followed by a 13-2 win to end the night at the MMMI Ballpark. With the pair of wins, the Colts improved to 5-8 overall with a 2-1 mark in district play. On the other hand, Dexter dips to 0-3 in district with a 4-8 overall record.

GAME 1

The scoring began in the bottom of the first when Caden Carter and Grant Maloney reached on consecutive errors, allowing the first run to cross. Nicolas Barcelo padded the lead with a line-drive RBI single, setting a tone for the innings to come. The floodgates truly opened in the second and third frames. Juan-Carlos Hurtado ignited the second with a leadoff triple, quickly followed by an RBI double from Rodolfo Anaya. By the time the third inning concluded, NMMI had batted around, highlighted by a massive rally that included Brock Spear’s two-run inside-the-park home run and a similar two-run inside-the-parker from Konstantino Scopelitis.

NMMI’s pressure on the base paths was relentless, recording over a dozen stolen bases and consistently advancing on passed balls. While Dexter managed to break through in the fourth—using a D Natividad-Spear triple to spark a two-run surge—the deficit was too large to overcome.

The Colts' defense remained sharp to close the door. In the top of the fifth, shortstop Makihi Phillips initiated a slick 6-4-3 double play, retired by Brock Spear and Juan-Carlos Hurtado, to seal the contest and cap off a complete team performance.

GAME 2

The first inning proved to be the decisive blow. Despite managing only two hits in the frame—including a two-run single by Rodolfo Anaya—the Colts sent 13 batters to the plate. Capitalizing on seven walks and two hit batters, NMMI raced out to an 8-0 lead. Brock Spear added to the tally with an RBI single and capped the frame's scoring by successfully stealing home.

On the mound, Juan-Carlos Hurtado was dominant. He earned the win by keeping the Dexter bats quiet, striking out eight over five innings of work. Dexter managed to scratch across single runs in the second and third innings, including an RBI single from J Gonzalez, but Hurtado consistently escaped further damage.

The Colts’ defense supported the effort with several key plays, including a 4-3 groundout connection between Brock Spear and Grant Maloney that ended multiple Dexter threats. NMMI added insurance runs in the fourth inning behind RBI efforts from Michael Hernandez-Ortega and Juan-Carlos Hurtado, both of whom reached safely during a late-game surge. The contest concluded in the fifth as Hurtado induced a groundout and a swinging strikeout to seal the victory.
