Lady Colt Basketball fall 69-47 to Lovington High School Saturday afternoon

On Saturday afternoon New Mexico Military Institute suffered their first loss of the year as they stumbled to Lovington High School 69-47. With the loss NMMI fell to 3-1 on the year while Lovington improved to 5-3 overall.

To open the game, Aleyah Andrews got cooking early as she scored the first five points of the game to give NMMI a fast 5-0 lead and force Lovington timeout. Later in the opening period, Neveah Clark got on the score sheet as she drilled the second three for the Colts in the first eight minutes of the game.

Lovington didn’t shy away after being down by five as they answered every NMMI bucket with a point of their own. Leslie Corrah nailed a three late in the quarter to make it a 14-11 lead for the Colts after the first quarter.

In the second period, Aleyah Andrews’ explosive offense continued as she scored nine of the 11 points in the quarter for NMMI. She was able to knock down another three in the process to keep the score close.

Lovington used seven second-quarter points by Abbi Shouse and six second-quarter points by Ashelynn Borunda to head into halftime with a slim 26-25 lead.

Coming out of the break, the NMMI offense struggled to score as they tallied eight total points in the third quarter. Angel Flores-Vargas was able to score her lone basket of the afternoon. Lovington on the other hand found a different momentum as they scored 17 points in the frame as they jumped out to a 10-point 43-33 lead after the third quarter. Ashelynn Borunda scored another seven points for the Wildcats in the frame.

In the final eight minutes, NMMI was outscored 26-14. After scoring just two points in the first half, Kaytlyn Lackey responded by scoring 14 second-half points, with 10 of those coming in the fourth quarter for the Lady Colts. A huge part of the 26 fourth-quarter points for Lovington was the 16 points scored by Ashelynn Borunda who found a late gear with two made threes in the fourth.

NMMI attempted to comeback but weren’t able to stop Lovington as they dropped their first home game of the year 69-47.

The Lady Colts will be back in action on Monday, December 15 as they take on Gateway Christian High School on the road at 6 p.m.
