On Thursday evening, New Mexico Military Institute concluded their road non-district games with a 49-24 loss against Chaparral High School. With the loss, NMMI dips to 1-2 on the season while Chaparral improves to a 3-1 start on the year.
Q1
Right from the start of the game Chaparral had their offense dialed in. After just two plays of offense, Israel Nieto connected with Tyvin Howard from 70 yards to take a quick 7-0 lead after a successful extra point attempt. Following a Colt fumble, Chaparral used 9 plays to move the ball just 32 yards. The drive was capped off by a quarterback sneak by Nieto to go ahead 14-0.
Q2
NMMI struggled to establish any offensive rhythm as they were unable to stay on the field. In their first possession of the second quarter Chaparral made it a 21-0 ball game after Nieto scampered for a 6-yard rushing touchdown.
Down 21 points, the Colts responded in just one play as Luke Tomasits found Aquaylis Jordan open down the middle of the field for a 68-yard passing touchdown and made it a 21-8 game after the Colts converted a two-point attempt on the PAT.
However, the Lobos answered with their own 53-yard passing touchdown on their next drive to take a 28-8 lead heading into halftime.
Q3
After a failed fourth down conversion on their opening drive of the second half, the Colts regained possession of the ball after Diego Del Rincon forced a fumble which was recovered by Caden Carter.
Facing a third and two yards to go, Jordan took a handoff from 45 yards out and out ran all the Chaparral defenders for six. The Colts converted their second two-point attempt of the game to make it a 28-16 game.
Q4
On the Lobos next drive they were able to use 10:08 off the clock and score yet again to make it a 26-16 lead for the home team. After an NMMI failed fourth down attempt, Chaparral was able to score on their ensuing drive with a quarterback sneak by Miguel Sierra to control a 43-16 lead.
The Lobos made it a 49-16 ball game after Issac Herrera broke off a 40-yard touchdown run. Down big, the Colts showed no quit.
In just five plays, the Colts moved the ball 65 yards and found the end zone with a 8-yard rush by Timothy Lester – his first of the game to make it a 49-24 score line.
