On Thursday night New Mexico Military Institute improved to 17-8 overall with a 58-34 win over Ruidoso High School at the Cahoon Armory Gym. With the win, the Colts improve to 5-2 against district opponents. With the loss, Ruidoso falls to 13-14 overall with a 1-6 mark against district competition.
The Colts opened the game scoring from deep. In the first eight minutes, Tyler Colburn drilled a pair of quick threes. Ben Parks got in on the action as he also scored a three of his own. The Colts scored three of their four three-point attempts in the first period. Pacen Phillips scored a pair of layups to help outscore Ruidoso 15-9 in the first quarter.
With a six-point lead, the NMMI defense allowed just seven points in the next eight minutes of action. For the Colts, Mihail Parada had an impressive run he scored eight quick points in the period. Pacen Phillips added another four points to continue his consistent first half. With his only points of the contest, Kamil Naime scored a layup to go along with a pair of shots from the free throw line. The Colts allowed just one point per minute as they enjoyed a 33-16 lead heading into halftime.
Ahead by double-digits the Colts shared the ball in the third period as six different players scored. On the other hand, the NMMI defense was locked down, allowing just six total points in the third quarter. Ben Parks scored four points to double his tally for the evening. Tyler Colburn drilled another three as she went 4-for-6 from behind the arc. The Colts outscored Ruidoso 15-6 in the quarter as they grew their double-digit lead into the final period.
In the final quarter, Ruidoso was able to score their most points in a quarter, as they scored 12 points with four different players scoring a basket. From the free throw line, the Warriors went 2-for-5 in the final eight minutes. For the Colts, Mihail Parad added four points as he finished with 14 points in total. NMMI was outscored 12-10 in the final quarter, but the Colts still secured the lopsided 58-34 win at home. The Colts end non-postseason play with a 5-1 record in the Cahoon Armory Gym.
The Colts return to action on Saturday, February 28 when they take on Tularosa in the district tournament at 6 p.m. in Tularosa, NM.
