Lady Colts take care of Dexter High in three sets

On Tuesday night New Mexico Military Institute defeated Dexter High School in three sets 3-0 in the Godfrey Athletic Center. With the win the Lady Colts improve to 1-0 in district play with a 9-7 overall record. With the loss, Dexter dipped to 12-6 on the year with a 0-1 start to district play.

SET 1

Early in the first set, NMMI established their rhythm and set the tone for the match as they took a quick 7-2 lead with the help of a couple of kills by Ana Maria Caetano Silva. The NMMI defense held strong as they grew their lead with some massive blocks that stopped Dexter from creating any rhythm.

Ana Maria Caetano Silva made it a 14-5 score in set one as she blasted a kill over the net, but the Dexter defender saw the ball fly off her fingers. After a Dexter timeout, NMMI closed out the first set on a 11-11 run as they took the first set 25-16 after Ana Maria Caetano Silva capped the set off with an ace.

SET 2

The first ten points of the middle set were back and forth as either side was able to create any rhythm. The score was tied 3-3, 5-5 and then once again at 6-6. After that, NMMI went on a 4-0 run to take a 10-6 lead. Dexter earned the next four points as they tied the match at 10-10 – forcing a Lady Colt timeout.

Following the timeout, NMMI recorded four straight points off the service of Ana Maria Caetano Silva to take a 14-10 lead. With some momentum, Dexter took a 16-15 lead, but NMMI responded with a few kills by Kaytlyn Lackey to regain the lead 21-19 – forcing a Dexter timeout.

Following the timeout, NMMI ended the set on a 4-3 run as they secured the middle set 25-22 to take a 2-0 set lead.

SET 3

In the final set, Emilia Hernandez-Ortega earned the first point for the Lady Colts as she blocked a kill attempt by the Demons. Not wanting to shy away, Dexter jumped out to a 5-2 lead, their largest lead of the match. With a couple of defensive blocks, NMMI conducted a 4-1 run as the set was tied 6-6.

 Siany Mcghan-Barthel gave the Lady Colts their first lead of the final set as she blocked a kill attempt by Dexter. The next few points were back and forth as the set was tied once again at 11-11. The Lady Colts earned the next four points but Dexter responded with a run of their own to tie the set at 15-15. After a kill by Emilia Hernandez-Ortega made it 19-15, Dexter called a timeout to stop the NMMI momentum.

The Lady Colts closed out the match on a 6-5 run as they secured the match with a 25-20 score in the final set to open district play with a win.
