Colts advance to state semifinals with 3-2 win over Tierra Encantada

On Saturday afternoon New Mexico Military Institute booked a spot in the NMAA Class 3A State semifinals with a 3-2 win over No. 6 seed Tierra Encantada. With the win, the Colts improve to 15-5 and a spot int the semifinal for the third consecutive season.

In the first half, the visitors caused an early scare after Daniel Dosamantes Urbina lost the ball near mid field. With a great through pass, Gabriel Marquez was able to give the Alacranes a 1-0 lead as he slotted the ball past the keepers reach.

With an immediate response Daniel Dosamantes Urbina played a tight pass to Ruben Meraz Valdez, who only needed two touches before finding the back of the net and tying the game 1-1.

Only a couple minutes later, Ruben Meraz Valdez completed his brace with a goal to give the Colts a 2-1 advantage 15 minutes into the match. The remainder of the half would remain scoreless as Rudolfo Anaya recorded a few saves in the first half.

In the second half, both teams battled early with no goal through the first 20 minutes.

Late in the second half, Patricio Carlon muscled his way through defenders and scored the third goal for the Colts to take a 3-1 advantage. Tierra Encantada didn’t shy away.

They battled their way back to a 2-3 after scoring with less than 10 minutes remaining in the contest. The Colts were able to hold off the No. 6  seeded  Alacranes to close out the match and secure the 3-2 win.

The Colts will take on No. 2 Sandia Prep on Wednesday, November 5 in Albuquerque, NM with the time still to be announced.
