McClain attended Goddard High School, where he played football and baseball before continuing his baseball career at Clarendon College, earning an Associate of Science degree.
McClain later transferred to the University of New Mexico, where he completed his Bachelor’s degree in Liberal Arts while competing at the Division I level. During his time at UNM, he was named a Stopper of the Year Award finalist and helped lead his team to two championships in the Mountain West Conference.
Following his collegiate career, McClain played one season with the Roswell Invaders.
In 2025, he helped lead NMMI to a NMAA Class 3A State Championship with a 7-1 win over Robertson High School.
Off the field, Hobie is married to Halie McClain and is the proud father of three children: RJ, Levi, and Jett.
