The 2026 spring semester proved to be a historic and action-packed chapter for New Mexico Military Institute athletics, defined by shattered records, deep postseason runs, and remarkable individual accolades across both the Bronco and Colt programs.
Under 14-year Head Coach Chris Cook, Bronco Baseball conducted a 38-20 overall record with a 22-14 mark in conference play and earned a spot in the 2026 Region V playoffs. Making it their third appearance in a regional playoff in the last four years. In 58 games, NMMI produced a program-record 562 runs and 115 home runs – ranked No. 14 in the nation. The Broncos ranked No. 1 in the country in triples with 45. As a freshman, Javier Yepiz broke the individual program home run record while recording 19 homers. Missael Maldonado Baez now holds the career home run record for the program with 23 in two seasons.
In his 31st year with the program, Head Coach Sean Schooley led the Bronco Basketball program to a 12-18 overall record with a 4-12 mark in WJCAC play. Forward, Joel Pinto was named a 2026 Western Junior College Athletic Conference Honorable Mention after averaging a team-high 14.9 points per game and 6.3 rebounds per contest. Pinto ranked No. 6 in the WJCAC in scoring, No. 7 in rebounds per game, No. 2 in three-point percentage and No. 8 in total blocks with 33. On Monday, Jan. 19 the Broncos knocked off No. 2 Midland College 72-62 on the road.
Under second-year Head Coach Jonathan Allen, The Bronco Golf team ended the year tied for 17th place finish at the NJCAA National Championships in Newton, KS, where they finished eighth in birdies with 41. At the start of the 2025-26 season, NMMI was ranked No. 20 in October and ended the year ranked No. 15 in the nation. NMMI finished a season-best fourth place at the Claud Jacobs Invitational in February and had a stretch of four consecutive tournaments finishing in the top six.
Under fourth-year Head Coach Brad Blackwell, the Colt Baseball team reached the 2026 NMAA Class 3A Baseball Quarterfinal, falling to eventual champions East Mountain high school. The Colts ended the season with a 13-16 overall record and an 8-7 mark in district play. First basemen Grant Maloney, Short stop Makihi Phillips and Pitcher Juan-Carlos Hurtado were all named to the 2026 3A District 4/5 First team. Catcher Nicolas Barcelo, Outfielder Michael Ortega and Pitcher Rodolfo Anaya were selected to the 2026 3A District 4/5 All-District second team. Konstantino Scopelitis, Caden Carter and Brock Spear were named Honorable Mentions.
Under eight-year Head Coach Connor Williamson, Colt Basketball earned a No. 9 seed in the NMAA Class 3A State Championships with a 17-10 overall record and 5-2 mark in district play. The Colts suffered a 61-50 first-round loss to No. 8 Tohatchi. Under second-year Head Coach Samuel Garza, Colt Golf was represented individually at the 2026 NMAA State Golf Championships in Socorro, NM. Junior, Case Dyer finished in 30th place, scoring 92 in the first round, 99 in the second round for a total of 191 for the tournament. Under first-year head coach Stephen Puntch, the Lady Colt Golf team fielded a team for the first time since 2022.
Under Head Coach Jan Olesinski, who completed his 39th year at NMMI, Boy’s and Girls’ Track and Field competed in eight meets in total. As a team, the Boys placed 15th at the NMAA State Championships with five total points. The girls earned a ninth-place finish with 13 points. Individually, Sophomore Madison Vinton earned a third-place finish in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:24.80 before placing fourth in the 1600 meter run with a time of 5:43.37. In the long jump, Evelyn McClain-Yu earned a seventh-place finish. As a team the girls placed third in the 4x800 meter relay posting a time of 10:37.46. For the boys, Luke Tomasits placed sixth in the pole vault competition. In the triple jump, Grantland Grant placed seventh while also placing ninth in the long jump. In the 100-meter dash Ethan Hawthorne finished in eighth place. In the 800-meter run, Ethan Stark finished ninth place. As a team the Colts placed 10th in the 4x800 meter relay with a time of 9:03.03.
Under second-year Head Coach Steven Huebner the Colt Tennis Team finished 4-1 in district play with an 8-3 overall record. The girls’ team finished with a 1-9 overall record and a 0-4 mark in district play. The boys’ team earned a bid in the 2026 State Tennis Championships in Albuquerque, NM as the No. 5 seed. The Colts took down Valencia in the opening round 5-4 before stumbling to No. 4 seed Artesia in the second round 5-4. Individually, Kevin Cheng, Jose Gonalez and Pablo Morales qualified as individuals at the state championships. Cheng earned the No. 5 seed and a 7-5, 6-1 first-round victory before falling to the No. 4 seed 4-6, 7-5 (5), 6-3 in the quarterfinals.
Under third-year Head Coach Lawrence Hall, Lady Colt Basketball earned a No. 15 seed in the NMAA Class 3A State Championships, for the first time since the modern structure of districts with a 12-9 overall record and a 0-7 mark in district play. The Lady Colts suffered a 53-17 first-round loss to the eventual champions, No. 2 Santa Fe Indian. Junior guard Aleyah Andrews was named to the All-District 1st team. On Tuesday, Jan. 13 NMMI scored a season-high 64 points in an 64-28 win over Loving high school.
Under Head Coach Jan Olesinski Boy’s and Girls’ Swimming competed in three meets during the regular season but did not manage to qualify as a team or individually for the NMAA State Championships.
