The New Mexico Military Institute Colt soccer team defeated the Artesia Bulldogs 4-2 at NMMI Stapp Parade Field on Tuesday to move to 6-1-1 on the season.
Artesia got a quick 1-0 lead on the Colts off of a corner kick. NMMI answered back on a John Zimmermen goal to tie it 1-1. The last goal of the half came from a NMMI corner kick from Quan Nguyen and sent into the back of the net off the knee of Andres Bleizeffer to give the Colts a 2-1 lead at the half.
The Colts tacked on another goal off the head of Alejandro Barcenas that the Artesia goalie just could not get to in time to give NMMI a 3-1 lead. The last NMMI goal came off the boot of Daniel Angulo from 30 yards out going over the goalies hands and under the crossbar. The Bulldogs added another goal, but NMMI was still victorious buy a score of 4-2.
Head Colt soccer coach John Barbour liked how his team played from behind and noted some aspects of the game that the team still needed to work on in practice this week.
Coach Barbour said, “We had to fight to get back into the game, but once we got rolling we kept the momentum. Near the end we got ahead a little bit and we got complacent and they creeped back in to the game. We have to be more disciplined and play a full 80 minute game where we don’t lose our focus.”
The next game for the Colts will be on Saturday in Ruidoso as they will face Ruidoso High School at 3:00 PM.
