The Rockets and Colts collided in a dual match at NMMI’s Gene Hardman Memorial Tennis Courts on Tuesday afternoon, with Goddard’s girls and NMMI’s boys each walking away with a 9-0 sweep.

“The girls’ team really is tough this year,” said first-year head GHS coach Chad Mann. “Right now we are undefeated and won our first tournament of the season, the Goddard High Invitational. We’re trying to build on the great job that previous coaches have done, with a goal to maybe go a little bit farther at state.”

The Institute boys’ team also took home a first place finish at the season-opening GHS Invitational on Feb. 15-16, before earning today’s ‘W’ against Goddard.

“Our boys are doing really well and came up with good results today,” said second-year head NMMI coach John Barbour, simply.

And under the new reclassification system by the New Mexico Activities Association with only two classes – 5A and 1A-4A – Goddard and NMMI will be competing against each other in the same class and district this season, along with Artesia, Lovington and Portales.

Coach Mann was also pleased with the effort – if not the results – of the Rocket boys’ squad.

“The [boys’] team is doing really well – we just need more experience,” said Mann. “I’m continuing to see positive attitude and effort, and outside of this match against NMMI, we’ve gone undefeated so far this this season.”

Coach Barbour echoed Mann’s comments about getting in more time on the courts.

“We were missing two from our girls’ team today, so many were playing up a spot or two. We’re just trying to get better as the weeks go by so that we can get ready for district,” said Barbour. “That includes tournaments coming up this weekend and next weekend, so we’ll get a lot of play and good match experience.”

Both teams will be back in action this weekend at the Roswell High Invitational – along with the tournament host Coyotes – on Friday and Saturday, March 1-2.
